KEY INFORMATION:
A planning application has been submitted for the comprehensive renovation of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, marking a major milestone in the 60-year history of the 15-hectare site.
The proposals, submitted to the London Borough of Bromley, detail a once-in-a-generation redevelopment of the historic sporting and community facility. Opened in 1964, the centre is a Grade II*-listed venue that has hosted international athletics and the first Women’s FA Cup final. The Mayor of London has now moved to modernise the site while preserving its heritage features.
The proposed works involve a major refurbishment of the indoor arena and the athletics stadium. A central feature of the plan is the renovation of the aquatics hall. The 50m swimming pool and diving pool will be refurbished to allow shallow water, 25m swimming, 50m swimming, and diving to coexist on a single level for the first time.
Renovations will also extend to the stadium stands. The design includes completing the stadium "bowl" with additional seating to improve the atmosphere during live events. New community spaces are planned, featuring a café, a 200m running track, and an outdoor gym to combine elite performance with local leisure use.
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I am delighted that the once-in-a-generation redevelopment of the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre has reached another key milestone with the submission of the planning application for its transformation. This is an historic and much-loved national sporting and community facility, where many UK sporting stars have started their careers and trained, but it needs major investment and refurbishment and I am committed to supporting this.”
Sustainability is a core component of the planning application. The design targets a 97 per cent reduction in carbon emissions. This will be achieved by moving the site to an all-electric system, supported by a £23m investment from the Green Finance Fund. The plans include the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof and the use of air source heat pumps for climate control.
The application introduces several new facilities to broaden the site's sporting offer. These include a six-court Padel centre, 3x3 basketball courts, and five-a-side football pitches. A full-size artificial multi-sports pitch is also included in the proposal to serve local clubs and athletes year-round.
Richard Dobson, Area Director for Morgan Sindall in London, said: “Everyone working on this scheme has pushed hard to make the design a showcase in what a modern, sustainable, inclusive and community-centred leisure centre should look like – all while paying homage to the venue’s inspiring legacy.”
