A man has been sentenced to 24 years behind bars following a serious assault in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, where he stabbed another man multiple times in a jealous feud. The incident, which left the victim with a punctured lung, highlights ongoing concerns about violent crime in the area.
Callum Strachan, 23-years-old, formerly of Burton Road in Barnsley, was found guilty of grievous bodily harm, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place after an 11-day trial at Sheffield Crown Court in February. Just before 7pm on Saturday, 15 June 2024, Humberside Police received a call from the East Midlands Ambulance Service reporting a man had been stabbed in an alleyway near Heneage Road. Air ambulance arrived at the scene first, and the immediate prognosis was that the victim had sustained a punctured lung after being stabbed in the back multiple times.
Officers were immediately deployed to the area, and the victim was taken to hospital where he remained for a week being treated for his injuries. An investigation was launched with Strachan detained three days later on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Whilst in custody and during interview, Strachan offered no comment to all questions asked and was bailed whilst further enquiries and evidence gathering could be carried out.
Police Constable Dan Greaves, leading the investigation, explains what happened: “Whilst Strachan was on bail, detectives continued their investigation to uncover the full circumstances around the incident, obtaining an account from the victim who explained how, until the attack, he had not ever met Strachan in person and only knew of him through his ex-partner.” He recalled how he had an argument over the phone with Strachan around 30 minutes before two people, one he recognised as Strachan, approached him wielding a baseball bat, the other holding a knife before chasing him along Heneage Road into an alleyway on Sixhills Street where Strachan has hit him multiple times with the bat. “Strachan has then taken the knife from the second person - who was completely unknown to the victim and wearing a face covering – in order to stab the victim four times causing a punctured lung and minor injury to his leg.”
As the investigation continued, extensive enquiries were conducted, including trawling through several hours of CCTV footage from in and around the area before and after the attack to corroborate the victim's account. Footage was identified that showed the victim outside a takeaway on Heneage Road with his friend at around 6.20pm, before they both walked towards Sixhills Street. Further footage then showed the victim running northbound back towards Heneage Road, being chased by a man carrying a bat and a second man wearing a face covering holding what looked to be a large knife. The two suspects were then seen running back into shot around a minute later, where Strachan was identified as being the one now wielding a knife. The victim was not seen again in the footage.
Whilst the investigation was progressing, in September 2024 Strachan attacked another man in South Yorkshire in very similar circumstances, fatally stabbing him. Both investigations were joined together, and the Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges of Section 18 grievous bodily harm, possession of a blade in public, and possession of an offensive weapon, along with murder for South Yorkshire Police, of which he entered not guilty pleas to both at an earlier court hearing. A trial date was set for both offences in July 2025, however it was adjourned until Monday, 2 February 2026, with a guilty verdict being found for all seven offences including murder, possession of a bladed article in public, and two counts of threatening with a bladed article in relation to the South Yorkshire investigation.
During sentencing today, Strachan was handed an automatic life sentence for murder in connection with the South Yorkshire Police investigation, and will be required to spend a minimum term of 24 years in prison before he will be eligible for parole. Police Constable Dan Greaves continues: “This was a completely unnecessary and brutal attack on a defenceless man leaving him for dead in the street all over a jealous feud.” He commended the victim for coming forward and supporting the investigation, acknowledging the significant mental and physical impact of the attack.
The incident occurred in Grimsby, specifically in an alleyway near Heneage Road and Sixhills Street. Heneage Road is located in the Heneage ward of North East Lincolnshire, an area predominantly characterised by terraced housing. Grimsby's overall crime rate in 2026 is 139 crimes per 1,000 people, which is 92% higher than the England, Wales & Northern Ireland overall figure. Violent crime in Grimsby is particularly high, with a rate 163% of the national average. In January 2026, 151 crimes were reported within half a mile of the DN32 9NR postcode area, which includes Heneage Road.
Humberside Police and national bodies offer crucial advice to prevent knife crime. The most effective way to prevent knife crime is to never carry a blade, as carrying a knife for "protection" actually increases the risk of being injured by one. Individuals are advised to avoid physical confrontations and walk away if a situation becomes heated. It is important to know that carrying a knife in public without a good reason is a serious criminal offence that can lead to a prison sentence. The Home Office has a plan to halve knife crime in a decade, which includes mandatory intervention plans for children found carrying knives and increased hotspot policing.
For anyone affected by violent crime, independent and confidential support is available. Victim Support is a national charity in England and Wales that provides free practical and emotional assistance to victims and witnesses of crime. Their Supportline is available 24/7 on 08 08 16 89 111. Support can be accessed regardless of whether the crime has been reported to the police.
If you suspect someone is carrying a knife or have concerns about crime in your area, please report it to Humberside Police by calling 999 in an emergency or 101 for non-emergencies. To remain anonymous, you can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
