A Crawley man has been sentenced to five years in prison for violent domestic assaults against two women known to him, bringing justice to his victims in the West Sussex borough.
Tiago Nunes, 28, of Westminster Road, Crawley, was jailed at Lewes Crown Court on 15 April after admitting two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and a separate offence of possession of a weapon in public. The court heard how Nunes subjected his first victim to violence, refusing to let her leave their home, striking her, smashing her phone, and choking her. A second victim also reported being assaulted by Nunes, requiring stitches in her face due to an injury to her upper lip.
The offences placed Nunes in breach of a suspended prison sentence previously imposed for causing grievous bodily harm without intent. On 15 March 2024, Nunes, possibly intoxicated through drug use, made disparaging comments, punched walls and a radiator, and injured himself, requiring hospital treatment. Upon returning home, he refused to allow the victim to leave, following her around the address before assaulting and choking her.
Nunes had a prior conviction from 21 August 2022, for randomly assaulting a man outside the Medusa bar in Crawley, leaving the victim unconscious with a bleed on the brain. He received a suspended sentence for this in January 2024. Nine months later, Nunes also assaulted another domestic partner while waiting for a taxi, seriously injuring her and damaging her phone, forcing her to seek help from a member of the public. On 7 June last year, Nunes was seen threatening a man with a metal bar in Crawley.
PC Bryony Tarrant stated: “We take reports of domestic abuse and violence extremely seriously. These were shocking incidents for the victims, and I commend their courage for reporting their experience to police. We were determined to get justice for them. Nunes’ jealous and aggressive behaviour towards them was appalling. He is now serving a significant custodial sentence.” Investigator Rachel Lawrence added: “We are glad that the court has held Nunes accountable for his actions. Violence against women and girls is a priority for Sussex Police, and this prison sentence is the result of the victims bravery in coming forward.”
