A 40-year-old man has been jailed for more than five years following a series of violent assaults against two women, one of which occurred in front of four children.

Jeremiah Joshua Smith, of no fixed address, appeared at Gloucester Crown Court on Wednesday 18 March. He pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent in relation to one victim and assault by beating in relation to a second woman.

Details of the Attacks

The court heard that in July 2025, Smith assaulted a woman at her home, punching her in the head and leg with enough force to prevent her from standing. A second, more serious incident occurred on 31 July 2025, when Smith used a key to enter another victim's home at 7:00 am.

The victim awoke to find Smith standing over her while two of her children and two of their friends were sleeping in the room. Smith armed himself with knives from the kitchen, threatened the woman, and subjected her to a sustained assault. During the incident, the victim managed to push the children out of a downstairs window to allow them to flee over a garden fence and seek refuge with a neighbour.

Police arrived to find the victim with a 7.5cm slash wound to her leg and a gash on her head. Medical examinations later revealed she had also sustained a fractured spine.

Sentencing and Criminal History

Recorder R. Weekes KC described Smith as a danger to future partners. Smith was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison, with an extended three-year period on licence.

The court was told Smith has 32 previous convictions for 64 offences, many of which relate to domestic abuse dating back to 2006. A 15-year restraining order was also granted, prohibiting Smith from contacting the victims, a witness, or the neighbour who assisted the children, and banning him from entering the Kingsway area.

Police Statement

Detective Constable Philpott, from Gloucestershire Police's Criminal Investigation Department, praised the bravery of the victims.

"It is clear that Smith poses a very real danger to the women who he forms a relationship with. The two victims in this case have been incredibly brave, and they were willing to stand in court and give evidence against Smith for his brutal actions against them."
