Lasers beam blazing-fast internet across Glasgow in world-first demo

April 15, 2026

Forget dodgy Wi-Fi or slow downloads! A new laser technology has just beamed data across Glasgow's River Clyde. This breakthrough promises lightning-fast, secure internet for all.

The Future of Internet is Here

University of Glasgow spin-out, Vector Photonics, pulled off the amazing feat. They successfully sent data from the Glasgow Science Centre to the Clydeside Distillery. This was all thanks to their cutting-edge photonic crystal surface emitting lasers (PCSEL) technology.

The incredible demonstration happened on March 31, 2026. It marks the first time this advanced laser technology has been shown outside of a lab. This is a massive leap forward for secure communications.

Dr Richard Taylor, CEO and Founder of Vector Photonics, said: "This is a major step forward for Vector Photonics, proving that our technology is a commercial reality in real-world applications." He added: "We believe that the demo is the most advanced application of a PCSEL to date."

Data Deep-Dive

This new PCSEL technology combines high power with rapid, surface-level data emission. It creates super narrow, bright beams. These beams keep signal loss to a minimum over long distances.

The system was designed and built by Fraunhofer UK. It successfully transferred data at a speedy 50 Mbps over 500 metres. Even better, error rates were well below what's acceptable.

Crucially, the lasers worked perfectly in real-world conditions. This included handling different temperatures, humidity, and wind. Previously, such tests only happened in controlled lab settings or simulations.

Dr Gerald Bonner, Principal Researcher at Fraunhofer CAP, commented: "This project has been a great opportunity to deploy Fraunhofer CAP's capabilities." He highlighted "the growing maturity of PCSELs and the potential of this important new diode laser technology in optical communications."

What's Next for Lasers?

This game-changing laser tech could deliver faster, secure internet between buildings, campuses, and even satellites. It completely bypasses the need for traditional cables or radio signals.

But the uses don't stop there. PCSEL technology could also supercharge AI data centres. It could improve Lidar systems and even advance 3D printing.

Vector Photonics recently scooped the prestigious Champion Spin-out Award at the University of Glasgow Knowledge Exchange & Innovation Awards 2026. This award recognised their incredible innovation and team effort.
