Residents in Muswell Hill, part of the London Borough of Haringey, are being urged to heighten their vigilance following a recent surge in local crime, particularly theft from motor vehicles. The Muswell Hill Ward recorded 12 vehicle crimes in March 2026 alone, highlighting a persistent issue in the area.
PC Robbie Bures issued an update on reported incidents between 27 April 2026 and 17 May 2026, noting that theft from motor vehicles has been a significant concern raised in the Met Engage priority survey. Several incidents of theft from motor vehicles were reported, including the theft of parcel shelves on Springfield Avenue and Muswell Hill, with one occurring around 21:30. Personal belongings were also stolen from a vehicle on Cranley Gardens between 14:30 and 15:40.
Other crimes included a common assault on Fortis Green Road, where a suspect was arrested and charged. Four other common assaults are under investigation, occurring on Muswell Hill Broadway (x2) and Muswell Hill Road. A business burglary on Muswell Hill Road and a possession of cannabis incident on Fortis Green Road are also under investigation.
Further reports detail motor vehicle interference on Woodland Gardens, nine shoplifting offences on Muswell Hill Broadway involving multiple suspects, and two thefts from persons on Muswell Hill Broadway and the 134 Bus. An e-bike was stolen from Fortis Green Road, and other theft offences, including a parcel stolen from Etheldene Avenue, are being investigated.
The Metropolitan Police consistently advise vehicle owners to take proactive steps to deter criminals. Always ensure your vehicle is locked, and close all windows and the sunroof to prevent "fishing" for items. Securing number plates with tamper-resistant screws can prevent them from being stolen and used illegally.
It is crucial to remove all valuables from sight or take them with you, as even seemingly insignificant items can tempt thieves. For keyless entry cars, consider using a signal-blocking Faraday Bag for your keys and keep them well away from your vehicle when at home. Parking in well-lit and busier areas can also significantly reduce the risk of vehicle crime.
Muswell Hill's annual total crime rate is 97 crimes per thousand resident population, which is considered a low crime level compared to other areas in England and Wales. However, the wider Haringey borough has an annual total crime rate of 136 per thousand population, rated as high. Haringey was identified as one of London's most targeted boroughs for car thefts, with 1.31 thefts per 1,000 people in the 2023/24 financial year.
In 2026, police forces across England and Wales received 287,362 reports of vehicle crime, marking an 11% decrease from the previous year. Despite this national trend, local vigilance remains paramount in areas like Muswell Hill.
