Burglary Blitz Hits Barnet's Hillside Gardens as Police Urge Vigilance

May 11, 2026

Residents in Barnet's Hillside Gardens are on high alert following a recent surge in burglaries, prompting an urgent message from local police. The incidents have caused "increasing concern" among the community, particularly regarding personal safety.

The Incident at Hillside Gardens, Barnet

Metropolitan Police have confirmed a number of burglaries on Hillside Gardens over the past few weeks. A "common pattern has been identified, with offenders gaining entry from the rear of properties." Police are actively reviewing all possible access routes from the rear of properties. They are also "in contact with the relevant parties to ensure that measures are being put in place to make access more difficult for offenders."

Barnet's Crime Landscape and Prevention

The London Borough of Barnet, which includes areas like the Underhill ward where Hillside Gardens is located, recorded a burglary rate of 5.3 crimes per thousand residents between March 2025 and February 2026. While Barnet is generally considered among London's safer boroughs, with an overall crime rate 21% lower than the London average in 2026, it has previously seen higher burglary rates.

Police are strongly encouraging residents to "remain vigilant, ensure doors and windows are securely locked—especially at the rear of properties—and report any suspicious activity immediately." Official advice from the Met Police and Crimestoppers also highlights the "WIDE" security combination: Window locks, Indoor lights on a timer, Door double or deadlocks, and External lights on a timer or sensor. Residents should also ensure rear fencing is of adequate height, consider attaching trellis to make access harder, and use anti-climb paint on flat roofs where possible. Keeping valuables out of sight and using external lighting are also crucial deterrents.
