Residents in the London Borough of Haringey are being urged to take extra precautions following a concerning rise in Blue Badge thefts from vehicles across the South Tottenham Ward. Police have issued a warning after a series of incidents targeting disabled parking permits.
UK Police confirmed an "ongoing issue of theft from motor vehicles within South Tottenham Ward." The force highlighted a pattern of incidents specifically targeting vehicles displaying Blue Badges on their dashboards. The modus operandi appears consistent, with cars being broken into and the Blue Badge subsequently stolen.
The areas most affected by these thefts include Gladesmore Road and Tynemouth Road, both located within the South Tottenham electoral ward. Criminals are reportedly stealing these badges to sell them on to individuals who do not qualify for one, enabling easier and cheaper parking.
The London Borough of Haringey has seen a significant number of vehicle offences. Between February 2024 and February 2025, 3,877 vehicle offences were logged in Haringey, representing 12.82% of all reported crime in the borough. Haringey was also identified as having one of the highest vehicle crime rates in England and Wales in 2023-24, with 12.60 offences per million vehicle miles. More recently, in 2026, the borough recorded a vehicle crime rate of 11.32 per 1,000 daytime population.
Blue Badge theft is a growing national concern, having risen by nearly 45% over the past five years. In the year leading up to March 2022, 24% of the 6,183 reported lost or stolen badges were confirmed as thefts. Such thefts not only impact disabled individuals but also cost local authorities between £5,000 and £10,000 per stolen badge annually due to fraud.
To minimise the risk of vehicle break-ins and Blue Badge theft, police advise badge holders to obtain a "virtual blue badge permit." This can be found on the Haringey Council website and reduces the need to display the physical badge. Haringey Council introduced this free virtual permit to combat theft, allowing eligible residents to register their number plate instead of displaying the badge.
The Metropolitan Police Service encourages prompt reporting of any stolen Blue Badges to aid investigations. General crime prevention advice for motorists includes parking in secure locations and utilising anti-theft devices.
Victim Support, an independent charity, offers free and confidential help to victims of crime across England and Wales. Their Supportline is available 24/7 on 08 08 16 89 111, or you can visit their website for further assistance.
