WHAT: Expansion of hospital appointment management capabilities via NHS App.
WHERE: All acute NHS trusts across England.
WHEN: 28 April 2026
WHY: To enhance patient control, reduce missed appointments, free up staff time, and reduce waiting lists.
Managing NHS App hospital appointments is now simpler for millions of patients across England, thanks to a nationwide rollout.
Hospital patients at every NHS trust across England can now check their referrals and appointments through the NHS App. This initiative simplifies patient care management. It consolidates information into one accessible platform.
Around two-thirds (64%) of all hospital appointments are currently visible within the application. Many patients also possess the ability to reschedule or cancel appointments. This functionality aims to reduce the incidence of missed appointments.
NHS England, the national body overseeing the health service, confirms that every acute NHS trust in the country is now integrated with the app. This technology saves hospitals money. It lessens the need for paper letters and SMS text messages.
Staff time and resources are freed up by digital processes. This increases productivity across the health service. It helps to address growing waiting lists.
Jules Hunt, Director General of Technology, Digital and Data for the NHS, commented on the recent developments.
“Millions of patients across England can now easily access information about their hospital referrals and appointments through the NHS App,” Ms Hunt stated. “This gives them more control and choice about their care and cuts out unnecessary paperwork.”
Ms Hunt described this as a significant transformation of patient experience. It harnesses digital technology for healthcare improvements. She linked it to the Government’s 10 Year Health Plan.
Across England, 41 million people are registered with the NHS App. More than 15 million users logged into the app during March alone. This figure is up by almost a third over the last 12 months.
Prescription ordering through the app also rose by over a third. This saves valuable time for both patients and NHS staff.
Dr Zubir Ahmed, Health Innovation and Safety Minister, highlighted the app’s impact. “The NHS App is already transforming the way people manage their care,” Dr Ahmed said. “These figures show just how popular it is.”
He added, “With patients at every hospital now able to view their referrals and appointments, we are cutting the admin burden. This helps to drive down waiting lists.”
There were 8.7 million appointment views last month, representing a 93% increase compared to a year ago. Fewer missed appointments mean more patients receive treatment sooner. The NHS App is central to the ambition of shifting the NHS from analogue to digital.
People treated at around half of trusts can receive appointment reminders via NHS App push notifications. This prevents missed appointments. Patients can also see health documents, such as discharge summaries, in the app.
New features are planned for the NHS App over the next year. These include follow-up appointment requests and access to specialist care. This will be provided through the NHS’s new online hospital, NHS Online.
NHS Online will see its first patients next year. It will modernise healthcare delivery. The service will offer triage for patients through the NHS App. It will also facilitate video consultations with doctors. This will speed up specialist care access across England.
