A woman has been ordered to pay more than £157,000 for running a puppy farm in a caravan in Eastbourne. Micaela Anderson-Letts, 36, of South Walk, Ramsey, Cambridgeshire, received a Confiscation Order at Kingston Crown Court.
Anderson-Letts was previously sentenced on 7 January 2025 at Kingston Crown Court. This was for causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal contrary to section (4)(1) of the Animal Welfare Act 2001. She received 24 months imprisonment suspended for 24 months. An animal banning order was also put in place until further notice, and she was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work.
This followed a long-running and complex investigation by the Sussex Police Rural Crime Team and financial investigators. They worked with partnership agencies, local authorities, and other police forces.
On 26 July 2021, a dog and 35 puppies were retrieved from a dilapidated caravan in Lister Road, Eastbourne. Officers and RSPCA Inspectors found the animals abandoned in squalor after Sussex Police received a report of concern for their welfare. Fourteen of the puppies required hospitalisation. One puppy sadly died from dehydration and starvation, as concluded by a post-mortem. The remaining dogs were re-homed after receiving appropriate treatment.
The subsequent investigation found that Anderson-Letts caused unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, namely a dog and puppies. This was due to a failure to act, specifically failing to transport the dog and puppies in a satisfactory manner and failing to provide medical treatment. She knew or ought reasonably to have known that this failure would have that effect or be likely to do so between 24 and 26 July 2021. She was arrested, charged, and pleaded guilty to all offences prior to sentencing.
Following the conclusion of the financial investigation, Anderson-Letts appeared again at Kingston Crown Court. She was given a Confiscation Order requiring her to pay £157,269.25 within a three-month period. Failure to comply could result in 18 months imprisonment in default.
