Man Dies After Erdington Assault, Police Launch Fresh Appeal

April 16, 2026

West Midlands Police are launching a fresh appeal for information after a man found with serious head injuries in Birmingham has sadly died. Michael Bennett, 38, was discovered unconscious on the pavement in Reservoir Road, Erdington, shortly before 1am on Friday 27 March.

Mr Bennett was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He tragically died last Friday (10 April).

Police are working to establish exactly how Michael sustained his injuries. Officers remain keen to hear from anybody who can assist their enquiries.

CCTV has been reviewed. Police know there were people within the vicinity of where Michael was discovered. Some individuals tried to help him but have not yet come forward.

Police have identified some people who could potentially be significant witnesses. These witnesses may help get answers about what happened to Michael, who was originally from London but lived in Erdington.

Family Tribute

In a tribute to Michael, his family said: “Michael was a much-loved son, brother, uncle and friend to many. He was part of a large family who he was very close to and loved visiting often.

“Michael loved sharing jokes and playing pranks on those around him. He had a very silly and funny nature about him, even when he did not always find life easy. His nieces and nephews will always remember him this way; their playful, silly uncle.

“Michael loved to cook and would create his own weird and wonderful recipes for us all to try. He was a massive foodie and feeder. Michael took great joy in cooking a meal for his family, we will always remember his famous orange chicken.

“Michael adored his siblings and Mum and was very protective of all his family. He was so very loved and we will miss him so very much. He did not deserve the ending he received to his life story. If you can share any details at all about what may have happened to Michael in his last hours, please do get in touch.”

Police Appeal

Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are working at pace to establish the circumstances surrounding Michael’s death.

"I'd ask for anyone who was in the vicinity of Reservoir Road - between 9.30pm on Thursday 26th March and 12:55am on Friday 27th March 2026 - and may have seen Michael to come forward and tell us what you know."

Anyone with information can contact police via 101, or by using Live Chat on the West Midlands Police website, quoting crime number 20/193108/26.
