WHO: Suzannah Wish

WHAT: Oldest person to perform an abdominal plank (female)

WHERE: Osoyoos, British Columbia, Canada

WHEN: 9 June last year

WHY: To overcome a medical diagnosis of a dowager’s hump and improve health in later life.

A super-fit 84-year-old planks for Record glory after a shock medical diagnosis transformed her from a pained retiree into a world-beating athlete.

The Seven Minute Miracle

Suzannah Wish was nearly 85 years old when she decided to show the world that age is nothing but a number.

She held a perfect abdominal plank for a staggering seven minutes and two seconds.

This feat is one that many gym-goers in their twenties would struggle to replicate.

The Canadian grandmother officially took the title from previous holder Sarah Blackman, who set the bar at 82 years old.

Suzannah admitted the achievement felt like a dream come true after years of hard work.

“I am feeling so very blessed and grateful at this age to be competing for this title,” she told Guinness World Records.

She added that the experience was even more incredible because she was finally free from the physical pain that once plagued her.

From Diagnosis to Dominance

The journey began six years ago when a doctor diagnosed her with a dowager’s hump.

This curvature at the base of the neck caused her constant pain and severely reduced her mobility.

Instead of slowing down, Suzannah followed her doctor’s advice to join a gym and rebuild her health.

She was already health-conscious and joked about her children’s reaction to her diet.

“Ask my children about brewer's yeast pancakes, yuck,” she quipped when discussing her lifestyle.

Her daughter introduced her to planking, and she soon realised she had a natural talent for the isometric hold.

At one point, she was even managing sessions close to 30 minutes long in her local gym.

“Eventually I was able to achieve close to 30 minutes,” Suzannah explained.

However, she noted that she often used a “downward dog” stretch for relief, which would not count under strict official rules.

The Science of Senior Strength

Research shows that planking is one of the most effective exercises for older adults.

It is an isometric exercise that strengthens the deep stabilizer muscles of the core without straining the spine.

Fitness experts note that regular planking can significantly reduce the risk of falls in seniors by improving balance.

It also helps to lower blood pressure by increasing muscle tension followed by a sudden rush of blood flow upon release.

Historically, the female plank record has been a battle of endurance and grit across all ages.

While Suzannah holds the record for the oldest participant, the longest duration for any female is held by fellow Canadian DonnaJean Wilde.

Wilde managed a mind-blowing four hours and 30 minutes earlier this year.

For Suzannah, the record was less about the clock and more about proving her own resilience.

She was encouraged by her gym mate, Pierre Forand, who noticed her potential during their shared workouts.

On the day of the attempt, she wore a pale pink top and flowery leggings while surrounded by cheering friends.

As her arms trembled with exhaustion, she refused to drop, pushed on by the shouts of her supporters.

When the timer finally buzzed, she smacked her hand on the mat in pure joy.

“Everyone involved was enthused to see this come to fruition,” she said.

Suzannah’s transformation proves it is never too late to start a fitness journey or reach for the stars.
