
A team of brilliant boffins have just shattered a major tech barrier, supercharging the quest for life-changing new drugs and materials. Scientists in Japan pushed the limits of quantum simulation, using a staggering 1,024 graphics cards to recreate complex molecular systems.
This monumental achievement by The University of Osaka and Fixstars Corporation means we're closer to developing game-changing quantum algorithms.
These algorithms are crucial for tackling currently 'unsolvable' challenges in areas like drug discovery and creating materials to fight climate change.
The boffins focused on Iterative Quantum Phase Estimation (IQPE). This clever method lets them do complex quantum calculations with fewer qubits, making it super efficient.
They used their 'chemqulacs-gpu' simulator. Then, they developed new parallel computing tech to maximise their huge GPU cluster's performance.
Their hard work paid off big time, smashing the previous 40-qubit limit for state-vector-based quantum circuit simulations.
They managed to calculate a 42-spin-orbital system for an H₂O molecule. Plus, they ran a massive 41-qubit circuit for an Fe₂S₂ molecule, showcasing the sheer scale of their breakthrough.
The team used a mind-boggling 1,024 NVIDIA H100 GPUs on AIST’s ABCI-Q system, blowing past old bottlenecks.
'Large-scale simulation using 1,024 GPUs is technically demanding,' explained Professor Wataru Mizukami. 'We repeatedly hit unexpected issues within the tight 48-hour computation window.'
He praised his team: 'I am delighted that the team, led by young researchers Yusuke Teranishi and Shoma Hiraoka, persevered. Their hard work, with prompt support, helped us achieve one of the world's largest results. I hope this accelerates quantum algorithm development.'
This wasn't a solo effort. The University of Osaka's QIQB group led the way in developing the simulation methods.
Fixstars Corporation provided their top-notch GPU performance optimisation. They resolved complex communication bottlenecks, making the simulation highly efficient.
