A serving inmate has received an 11-year extended sentence for a serious assault on a prison officer at HMP Onley, Northamptonshire.
Benjamin Scott, 46, attacked the officer at approximately 9.30am on December 27, 2024. He threw boiling water into his unsuspecting victim’s face. Scott then hit the officer several times over the head with a kettle.
Despite sustaining second degree burns to his left face, the prison officer bravely helped colleagues. He also suffered an ocular burn to his left eye. This required months of specialist care and medical procedures at University Coventry Hospital. Scott was later transferred to another prison.
Scott was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 – GBH with intent. During his formal police interview with Northamptonshire Police, he made a full and frank disclosure. He expressed remorse for his actions.
During the interview, Scott stated it was not a targeted attack on the prison officer. He added he wanted a move from the prison. He felt he was not getting support for his declining mental health.
Scott, formerly of Sheffield, pleaded guilty on November 19 last year. This was to one count of Section 18 – GBH with intent. He was handed an extended sentence at Northampton Crown Court last month (March 20). Scott’s extended sentence is made up of six years imprisonment with an extension of five years on licence.
Detective Constable Jamie Yates of CID West, whose team led the investigation, said: “This was a particularly violent, unprovoked attack by Benjamin Scott who wanted to orchestrate a move from the prison.
“Such violence has no place in our society and that includes within the prison establishment, where prison officers should be able to feel safe to carry out their duties without fear for their personal safety.
“The prison officer in this case acted bravely and professionally throughout considering the seriousness of his assault and I must praise him for this.
“We are pleased with the significant extended sentenced imposed by the courts, as it not only reflects the severity and seriousness of the offence committed by Scott but recognises the danger that he presents to others.”
Scott had received a 15-year jail term in 2012. This was after his conviction for manslaughter in Sheffield in 2011.
