If you have ever dealt with the "winter itch" or the red, angry patches of eczema, you know how much a bad skin day can ruin your day.
We spend millions on moisturisers, but scientists have just found that the real secret to soft skin is hidden deep inside our blood.
Boffins have discovered a "gatekeeper" protein that acts like a tiny vacuum, sucking up essential fats from your bloodstream and delivering them straight to your skin cells. This keeps your outer layer waterproof, healthy, and—most importantly—itch-free.
The protein is called MFSD2A, and it is the only way for your skin to get a vital fat molecule called LPC. This molecule carries linoleic acid, an "essential" fat that your body cannot make on its own.
Without this "gatekeeper" doing its job, your skin barrier literally starts to fall apart. This leads to the dryness, thickening, and painful inflammation we see in common conditions like psoriasis.
In Singapore, where the study was conducted, eczema affects a staggering one in 10 people at some point in their lives. Psoriasis is also a major issue, hitting between one and two percent of the population.
When researchers removed the MFSD2A protein in lab tests, the results were dramatic. Even when the diet was full of healthy fats, the skin became inflamed and damaged because the "gatekeeper" was not there to let the good stuff in.
The team found that people with severe eczema and autoimmune skin conditions actually have much lower levels of this protein. This "wow" discovery suggests that the disease progresses because the skin simply cannot repair its own barrier.
Professor Lok Sheemei, from Duke-NUS, said: "This study uncovers the molecular pathways in which our skin takes up the lipids it needs to stay healthy, offering new insights into skin barrier disorders."
She added that the discovery offers "fresh hope" for patients living with these life-altering conditions. The team is now looking at whether special fat supplements could help "recharge" the skin from the inside out.
The researchers believe that ensuring our skin gets enough of these fats could lead to the most effective treatments we have ever seen. It is a massive step toward a future where "itchy" is a thing of the past.
