The ceremonial heart of Mexico City was transformed into a massive artificial pitch as 8,873 people gathered to set a new Guinness World Records title for the largest football lesson.

Participants wearing the green, white, and red of the Mexican flag filled the Zócalo square on 15 March to dribble, pass, and juggle under the guidance of volunteer coaches. The event serves as a major community milestone as the nation prepares to co-host the 2026 World Cup.

A record-breaking display of community spirit

The record achievement obliterated the previous benchmark of 1,038 people held by the Seattle Soccer Community. Despite over 10,000 people arriving at the square, strict registration guidelines meant only those who arrived on time and followed the specific lesson criteria were officially counted. The 40-minute session was designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their previous experience with the sport.

"The class was pretty simple, and a lot of people here don't even know how to play football", said 67-year-old participant Pedro Garcia. He added: "But that wasn't the point – it's about the people, the community".

Legends and leaders unite for the Social World Cup

The event was attended by several icons of Mexican football, including members of the 1971 Women’s World Cup winning team and former men's internationals such as Oscar Pérez and Francisco Fonseca. This initiative is part of the "Social World Cup" launched by the government and the tourism board SECTUR to rally support for Mexican arts and culture through sport.

With this record, the city sends a message to the world: "Sport, soccer, is the universal language, a language of peace that needs no translation", stated Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada. She concluded her address to the cheering crowd by saying: "Congratulations, Mexico City, today we kick off the World Cup!"

Transforming the iconic Zócalo square

The visual impact of the event was noted by officials who witnessed the sea of participants on the artificial turf. Beyond the square, the festive atmosphere spread through the city streets with percussion bands and informal games. This marks another successful mass participation record for the city, which recently set a title for the largest human image of a shirt.

Seeing the Zócalo square covered in grass, and then seeing people dressed in green, white, and red, mirroring the colours of the flag, was simply beautiful, said Guinness World Records Adjudicator Alfredo Arista. The organisers expressed their gratitude for the recognition, noting that the event was about proving the city's amazing spirit to the world.
