Cancer survivor finalises four-year divorce from husband who abandoned him after diagnosis

March 9, 2026

A cancer survivor has revealed he has finalised a "hellish" four-year divorce from the husband who abandoned him just one week after his diagnosis.

Abandoned in the dark

The anonymous survivor explained that he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in August 2021. Just seven days later, his husband announced he was leaving because he "didn't sign up to be a nurse."

The patient recalled a warning from his oncologist during his first appointment. The doctor noted that men frequently leave their spouses during serious illnesses, a statistic that apparently remains consistent regardless of sexuality.

Every single person in his support group married to a man reported a similar experience of abandonment. Despite the betrayal, the man underwent surgery and intensive chemotherapy alone, nearly dying during the process.

The remorseless return

By August 2022, the survivor was officially told there was "no evidence of disease." Upon hearing the news of the recovery, the ex-husband reportedly attempted to call off the divorce and move back in.

The survivor was horrified by the request and pushed forward with the legal separation. The ex-husband then allegedly "dragged out" the court proceedings for years before a judge finally saw through the "games" this week.

"I feel like shouting from the rooftops because I'm free," the man wrote in a viral post. He celebrated his final decree absolute as his second major victory over "cancer" in four years.

A future without dead weight

Community reactions have been overwhelmingly supportive, with many congratulating him on losing the "dead weight" of an unsupportive partner. Some observers noted the irony of marriage vows that promise loyalty "in sickness and in health."

Others expressed shock at the remorselessness of a partner who only wished to return once the "nursing" duties were no longer required. The survivor has since landed a prestigious government job and is planning a 40th birthday vacation.

The story serves as a "shattering" reminder of the resilience required to face life-threatening illness alone. For this survivor, the future is officially bright, healthy, and entirely single.
