Southampton students build world-first 'blockchain black box' to make autonomous drones unhackable

March 7, 2026

Imagine a world where you never have to worry about a "rogue" robot or a delivery drone gone wrong.

Brilliant student engineers from the University of Southampton have just made that future a lot safer. They have built a world-first 'black box' for drones that uses blockchain to record every single move a machine makes.

Think of it like a digital diary that nobody can delete or change. If a drone has a mishap, we will now know exactly why, with zero chance of a cover-up.

Up until now, drones usually sent their data to a big computer in the clouds. But if the signal dropped, the data was lost.

The Southampton team changed the game by putting the brain directly inside the drone itself. Even if the Wi-Fi cuts out, the drone keeps a perfect, permanent record of its flight.

The tech is so smart it fits onto a tiny computer chip. By moving the system from software to hardware, the team saw a massive boost in power.

They achieved a staggering 10,000% gain in energy efficiency. That means the security doesn't drain the battery, letting the drone fly for longer.

They also recorded a 500x performance jump compared to older methods.

"The test was a huge success," said lead student Yi Cherng Tan. He worked with tech giants like Arm and Siemens to pull off the feat in just one semester.

This isn't just about drones, though. The same tech could soon be in your self-driving car or the robots helping out in hospitals.

It provides "proof of accountability" which is a fancy way of saying robots can finally be held responsible for their actions.

With new AI laws coming into force this year, this UK invention puts British tech right at the front of the pack.

The next time you see a drone buzzing overhead, it might just be carrying a bit of Southampton genius inside.
