WHO: Watford Borough Council and Everyone Active.
WHAT: Performance data confirms solar panels met 50% of summer energy demand.
WHERE: Watford Leisure Centre Woodside.
WHEN: Summer performance data June to August 2025.
WHY: To lower energy costs and reach net zero carbon goals by 2030.
Watford Leisure Centre Woodside solar panels are slashing carbon emissions after meeting nearly half of the site's electricity demand during the peak summer season.
The 680-panel system generated approximately 113,000 kWh of clean electricity between June and August 2025. On particularly sunny days, the installation provided 100 per cent of the centre's daytime power requirements. This significantly reduces the facility's reliance on the national grid while maintaining normal service levels.
A £403,900 grant from Sport England’s Swimming Pool Support Fund made the project possible. It supports Everyone Active to run a more resilient facility for the local community. Residents can continue to enjoy high-quality leisure opportunities while the borough reduces its environmental footprint.
The environmental benefits recorded this summer were equivalent to planting more than 1,000 trees. The system saved 20 tonnes of carbon emissions in just three months. Over a full year, the total carbon savings are expected to reach around 45 tonnes.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said that investing in renewable energy delivers real benefits for the town. He noted that the panels are making a significant difference by cutting energy costs and carbon simultaneously. This project is a vital part of the council's ambition to reach net zero emissions by 2030.
Iain Milton, contract manager for Everyone Active, added the results show just how effective the project has been. The clean energy source ensures the centre remains a welcoming and sustainable asset for Woodside residents. Further energy efficiency initiatives are currently being planned for other public buildings across Watford.
