The new personalised scoring calculator helps doctors determine which patients can safely stop leukaemia medication. It specifically focuses on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). These are common and effective treatments for CML. Chronic myeloid leukaemia is a type of blood cancer. It affects the bone marrow and white blood cells, requiring long-term management.

While TKIs are essential for controlling CML, they have significant drawbacks. Patients often experience a range of side effects. These include fatigue, muscle pain, skin rashes, and digestive issues. Such chronic side effects can profoundly reduce a patient's overall quality of life. They impact daily activities and well-being.

Currently, clinicians face a key challenge. There is no validated, accurate tool to predict which patients will thrive after discontinuing TKI therapy. This uncertainty often means patients continue medication longer than necessary.

Crucially, around half of CML patients respond exceptionally well to TKI treatment. They achieve very low or undetectable levels of disease in their blood. For these individuals, stopping TKIs is a highly desirable outcome. This state is known as treatment-free remission.

Dr Simone Claudiani leads this significant research and development. He is a senior clinical research fellow in haematology at the Trust. Dr Claudiani also holds an honorary clinical lecturer position at Imperial College London.

"Our CML team here at Hammersmith Hospital has worked collaboratively with clinicians across the UK and beyond," Dr Claudiani confirmed. "We developed this new personalised scoring calculator." He added, "It specifically helps clinicians predict which patients can enter treatment-free remission after stopping their TKIs."

The innovative tool operates simply. Doctors input specific patient data. It then processes this information. The tool calculates a patient's individual risk of relapse. This provides clear, data-driven guidance for complex treatment cessation decisions.

"We hope this tool will help us give each patient better, more accurate advice and support," Dr Claudiani stated. The research received vital backing from the NIHR’s Imperial Biomedical Research Centre.

The next critical phase involves validating this new scoring tool. This will occur in larger, independent groups of patients. It aims to confirm its reliability and effectiveness. Successful validation is essential before its potential introduction into routine clinical practice.

This development represents a tangible advancement in personalised cancer care. It promises more precise patient assessment. This moves beyond general guidelines. Ultimately, this CML treatment prediction tool could enable many more CML patients to safely discontinue burdensome TKI treatment.
