The devastated family of a 37-year-old man whose body was found in Coventry have paid tribute to him, describing him as a "loving and caring" person who was the "pillar of strength" for his family.
Thomas Niven, known as Tom, was discovered on Friday 13 March 2026. Officers located his body within a wheelie bin in a park off Daimler Road. West Midlands Police have launched a murder investigation, and Tom's family is currently being supported by specialist officers.
In a statement released through the police, Tom’s family expressed their shock and heartbreak at his loss.
"Sadly our youngest son, stepson, brother, brother in law, nephew and uncle, Tom has been tragically taken away from all who dearly loved him," the family said. "He was full of laughter and had such a vibe for life; he had a charm that would lift a dull spirit. We are so proud to have had Tom in our lives."
The family highlighted his love for music, playing pool, and his soft spot for animals and his nieces and nephews. They concluded by urging anyone with information regarding his death to contact the authorities.
Three people remain in police custody as enquiries into the death continue. A man and a woman in their 40s, and a man in his 20s, were arrested on Sunday 15 March in Blackpool on suspicion of murder and assisting an offender.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Poole, from the West Midlands Police Major Crime Unit, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing as officers work to build a clear picture of the events leading up to the discovery.
"We'd like to thank everyone who has been in touch providing information so far and we would still urge anyone who might know more to still get in contact," DCI Poole said.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with information that could assist the investigation. Members of the public can contact West Midlands Police by calling 101 and quoting log 4148 of 13 March, or via the Live Chat function on the force's website.
