Common osteoporosis pill could slash your risk of dementia by 24%

March 17, 2026

KEY INFORMATION:

WHO: Professor Cheung Ching-lung and a team from the University of Hong Kong (HKUMed).

WHAT: A massive study of over 120,000 patients exploring the link between osteoporosis drugs and brain health.

WHERE: Hong Kong.

WHEN: 17 March 2026.

WHY: To find affordable and effective ways to prevent dementia as global cases are expected to hit 139 million by 2050.

New research shows osteoporosis medication may help reduce the risk of dementia in a major breakthrough for older adults.

Imagine if the pill you take to stop your bones from becoming brittle was also acting as a secret shield for your brain. For millions of people worried about memory loss while on their morning commute, this dream just got a lot closer to reality.

Experts have found that widely used bone-strengthening drugs might actually "double up" as a powerful weapon against Alzheimer’s. It is a discovery that could save thousands of minds while also saving our skeletons.

The skeleton-brain connection

Scientists at HKUMed decided to look into why osteoporosis and dementia so often go hand-in-hand. They tracked more than 120,000 patients aged 60 and over to see how their meds affected their memory.

The results were stunning. Those taking a specific type of drug called nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (NBPs) saw a massive drop in their dementia risk.

Professor Cheung Ching-lung said: "Our study provides evidence that NBPs may offer dual benefits in strengthening bones and reducing fracture risk, as well as potentially preventing dementia."

Cracking the 24% code

The data shows that NBP users had a 24% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s compared to those on other bone treatments. Even against untreated patients, the risk was still 16% lower.

Researchers estimate that if you treat just 48 patients with these drugs for five years, you could potentially prevent one case of dementia. This is a huge win for public health in a rapidly ageing society.

Cheap, safe, and ready to go

While the world waits for expensive new "miracle" drugs to clear the fog of dementia, these bone pills are already safe and widely available. This "drug repurposing" could be a fast-track way to protect high-risk populations today.

Professor Cheung added: "In our rapidly ageing society, these findings suggest that while waiting for novel therapies, existing medications can also provide additional protection."

The link was strongest in women and patients who had already suffered hip fractures. It turns out that the biological pathways these drugs use to fix bones might also be the key to keeping our brain cells firing.

With dementia cases set to triple to 139 million by 2050, this simple "recycled" treatment could be one of our best bets to beat the crisis. It is a bone-fide breakthrough that gives us all a reason to be optimistic.
