Anglia rail route records 176 lifesaving interventions in 2024/25 as mental health support expands

March 11, 2026

KEY INFORMATION:

  • 176 lifesaving interventions occurred on the Anglia rail route in 2024/25.
  • Nearly 1,000 interventions have been recorded in the region over the last five years.
  • Network Rail Anglia has hired a second mental health nurse to support its bespoke programme.
  • A new community shed for mental health workshops will open in Ingatestone this spring.
  • Pop-up stalls at stations including Cambridge and Colchester will provide resources throughout March.

Network Rail, Samaritans, and the British Transport Police have released new data highlighting the impact of the "Small Talk Saves Lives" campaign.

On the Anglia rail route, 176 lifesaving interventions were recorded during the 2024/25 period. This contributes to a five-year total of nearly 1,000 interventions within the region.

The campaign encourages passengers to trust their instincts and start a simple conversation if they see someone who may be in distress, as brief interactions can interrupt negative thoughts.

Expanding professional and community support

In response to a rise in suicide-related incidents over the past two years, Network Rail Anglia has expanded its bespoke mental health support programme. The organization has recently contracted a second mental health nurse to assist with immediate interventions and follow-up care. To date, more than 150 people have received direct support through this coordinated initiative with NHS and community partners.

Local infrastructure is also being adapted to support mental health. Network Rail Anglia is working with Ingatestone Parish Council and Greater Anglia to open a "community shed" this spring. This dedicated space will host mental health workshops, classes, and community activities designed to strengthen local connections and awareness of available services.

Becky Bray, head of readiness and resilience for Network Rail Anglia, said: “Many people in our communities face mental health challenges, and that can sometimes be visible on the railway. While our teams are trained to spot the signs, passengers are encouraged to trust their instincts and start a simple conversation if they feel safe.”

Station outreach and public engagement

Throughout March, railway teams and partners will host pop-up stalls at key stations to build public confidence in starting conversations. These events provide resources and tips for passengers, alongside signposting to specialist mental health services.

Pop-up locations for the remainder of March include:

  • Witham and Cambridge: 13 March 2026
  • Rayleigh and Turkey Street: 19 March 2026
  • Colchester: 25 March 2026

The power of human connection

Research conducted in early 2026 suggests that 78% of people admit to avoiding small talk, despite its potential benefits. Samaritans emphasizes that simple questions about the weather or station facilities can be effective.

Dave Brown, head of rail at Samaritans, said: “We know that people are often worried about saying the wrong thing to someone who is visibly upset, but it’s always better to say something than nothing at all. A brief chat, about the weather, or asking someone where they can grab a coffee, can be all it takes to interrupt those negative thoughts.”

If you or someone you know is struggling or in distress, help is available. You can contact Samaritans any time, day or night, for free by calling 116 123 or emailing jo@samaritans.org. If you are on the railway and see someone you believe is in danger, please alert a member of station staff or contact the British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 999 in an emergency. Remember, you do not have to face your challenges alone; reaching out for support is a vital first step toward safety and recovery.
