Asda Calls for Rethink on Government's Plans to Defund Apprenticeships

February 9, 2026
asda

WHO: Asda

WHAT: Urging a rethink on government plans to defund leadership and management apprenticeships.

WHERE: UK-wide, with specific impact on hubs in London, Manchester, Leicester, and West Yorkshire.

WHEN: February 2026, following the release of the 2025 Apprenticeship Impact Report.

WHY: To protect career progression routes from the shop floor into management.

Asda is fighting to protect Asda-Management-Pathways as government reforms threaten to defund leadership training.

Asda Challenges Cuts to Asda-Management-Pathways

Asda has called on the Government to reconsider plans that could defund leadership apprenticeships.

The supermarket argues these reforms will stop workers moving from the shop floor into management.
Management roles provide long-term career stability for thousands of retail employees.

James Goodman, Asda’s Chief People Officer, said apprenticeships are central to developing the next generation. He warned that defunding leadership training would be a "backward step" for the retail sector. The retailer reported that half of all colleagues completing apprenticeships since 2024 have secured promotions.

The Financial Impact of Restrictive Funding

Asda invested £2.7 million in apprenticeship training last year alone, it said.
This funding helped over 200 colleagues complete programmes while working their day jobs.
Since 2017, the supermarket has spent £19 million to support 2,700 staff through these schemes.

However, the report highlights significant waste in the current funding system. Asda saw £11.7 million of its apprenticeship levy expire unused last year. Strict rules currently prevent the supermarket from deploying these funds more effectively.

Supporting Local Communities and SMEs

The supermarket also siad it transferred £1.15 million in levy funds to smaller businesses.
This supported 165 apprentices across 80 small and medium-sized firms.
The transfers helped create jobs in London, Manchester, Leicester, and West Yorkshire.

James Goodman added that the current system is "holding employers back." Asda now offers 85 different apprenticeship programmes to its 140,000 colleagues. The retailer insists that flexible funding is vital for the future of UK agriculture and retail.
