The project is expected to last for 26 weeks and forms a key part of the Liverpool City Region’s Key Route Network Levelling Up Programme. The scheme is designed to enhance the resilience of the city's main corridors, supporting more reliable journeys for residents, businesses, and travellers heading toward Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Phase One: Surveys and Initial Disruption

The first few weeks of the programme will focus on essential underground surveys and investigations. During this period, residents and commuters should expect:

• Lane closures at various sections of the road.
• The use of temporary traffic lights to manage vehicle flow.
• Potential delays to journey times through the Speke area.

Long-term Improvements

Following the initial investigation phase, the main body of work will deliver comprehensive infrastructure updates, including:

• Road Resurfacing: Replacing worn sections of the carriageway to ensure a smoother surface.
• Drainage Upgrades: Improving the road’s resilience to heavy rainfall and reducing the risk of flooding.
• Modernised Signals: Upgrading traffic lights and street lighting at key junctions to improve traffic management.
• Pedestrian Safety: Enhancing pavements and pedestrian crossings to improve accessibility for those on foot.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said: “This investment in Speke Hall Road is an important step in improving safety, accessibility and journey reliability for everyone who uses this key route. By upgrading crossings, pavements and signals, we’re creating a safer environment for pedestrians while also tackling congestion and improving traffic flow.”
