Linda Sinrod has spoken out after officially retiring from ice hockey, concluding her career as the oldest female hockey player in the world.
At 84 years and 198 days old, Sinrod played her final game for team Gray in the Capitals Women’s Hockey League in Arlington, Virginia, last year.
Although her team lost the final match 5–2, Sinrod noted that the experience was "bittersweet," marking the end of an era for a sport she has played for nearly 50 years. This final appearance updated her previous Guinness World Records title, which she first achieved at age 80.
A Late Start and Early Trailblazing
Sinrod did not begin playing hockey until the age of 35. A former college figure skater, she had stepped away from the ice after graduation until a chance encounter on a frozen lake in 1975 led her to try the sport. At the time, professional leagues and Olympic recognition for women’s hockey did not exist.
Despite the lack of formal infrastructure, Sinrod became a founding member of the Redcoats, the first women’s ice hockey team in the Washington D.C. area, where she played for a decade.
Career Timeline and Returns to the Ice
Impact and Recognition
Throughout her tenure, Sinrod became a symbol of longevity in women’s athletics. One of her most notable professional moments occurred during a "Women in Hockey Night" at Capital One Arena. After being announced as the record holder, she participated in a ceremonial puck drop alongside Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin.
Sinrod’s retirement comes at a time of significant growth for the sport, with professional avenues now available in the PWHL and the Olympics—opportunities that did not exist when she helped found the Redcoats in the 1970s. While she plans to keep updated with the sport through the news, she told Guinness World Records that her main message to others is that "you are never too old to start playing."
