Former Northamptonshire special constable convicted of 22 sexual offences

A former special constable with Northamptonshire Police has been convicted of 22 sexual offences following a complex investigation and a two-week trial.

Wissem Bonafia, 48, was found guilty of a series of crimes committed between 2014 and 2019. The charges include rape, assault by penetration, multiple counts of actual bodily harm (ABH), and the taking and making of indecent photographs of children.

Investigation and Arrest

The investigation began in 2020 after the force received intelligence regarding illegal images of children. In August of that year, officers attended Bonafia’s address in Barton Seagrave, where he was arrested and multiple electronic devices were seized.

Digital forensic inspections uncovered numerous indecent images and videos of females ranging from prepubescent age to 17. Investigators confirmed that many of these images had been taken by Bonafia himself.

Court Proceedings

At the start of his trial on 16 February 2026, Bonafia pleaded guilty to six offences, including taking indecent photographs of a child and one count of ABH. As the trial progressed, he admitted to a further four counts of ABH.

On 30 March, a jury found him guilty of an additional 12 offences. He was found not guilty of three counts of rape, one count of engaging in sexual communication with a child, and one count of taking an indecent photograph of a child.

Police Response

Bonafia resigned from his duties as a special constable on 9 November 2021. An accelerated gross misconduct hearing held in February 2023 determined that he would have been dismissed without notice had he still been serving.

Detective Constable Caroline Knight, the lead investigator, praised the victims for their bravery: “They have shown great bravery in supporting our case and providing their evidence in court, despite experiencing the most heinous of crimes perpetrated by a person who knew what he was doing was wrong. They were all vulnerable in their own way and should be proud of what they have done to get it to this point.”

Detective Inspector Lee Jones added: “Bonafia’s crimes are a disgrace to the uniform he once wore, and I hope this investigation and subsequent result at court reassures the wider public that we will do all we can to root out individuals like him.”

Bonafia remains in custody awaiting sentencing.
