Prisoner handed extended sentence for razor attack

April 22, 2026

A serving prisoner has received a nine-year extended sentence for a serious assault on an inmate at HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough. Taimoor Ali launched a surprise attack on November 10, 2024, at approximately 10am. He slashed his victim's face with a razor.

The attack caused two deep lacerations on the victim's left cheek. The unsuspecting victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to hospital. He required specialist maxilla-facial surgery for the wound, which measured between 10-12cm in length.

Northamptonshire Police were informed of the incident. Ali was arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent. He was also arrested for the unauthorised possession in prison of a knife or an offensive weapon.

On October 31 last year, 25-year-old Ali, previously of Nelson in Lancashire, appeared before Northampton Magistrates’ Court. His case was transferred to the county’s crown court for trial. On February 18 this year, at Northampton Crown Court, Ali pleaded guilty to both counts.

He returned to the same court on April 1. Ali was handed an extended sentence. This type of sentence is used for criminals convicted of specific offences who are deemed extremely dangerous.

Ali’s sentence comprises a six-year and six-month custodial term. This includes an extension period of two years and six months. He was also ordered to pay a £228 victim surcharge. This sentence will run consecutively to the original 71 months custodial imposed by Sheffield Crown Court in December 2023 after Ali was convicted of two counts of.

Police Statement

Lead investigator, PC Chris Atkins of Northamptonshire Police’s Prison Investigation Team, said: “Such violence has no place in our society and that includes within prisons, where people should be able to serve their sentences without fear for their personal safety from others. We are pleased with the significant extended sentenced imposed by the courts, as it reflects the severity and seriousness of the offence as well as recognises the danger that Taimoor Ali continues to present to society.”
