The highly skilled work of West Midlands Police forensics teams is being showcased in the latest episode of the documentary series Forensics: The Real CSI.
The episode, which aired on 29 March 2026, focuses on a significant investigation into a sexual predator who broke into a Birmingham home in December 2024 and assaulted a young girl. Investigators utilized advanced DNA harvesting techniques and digital forensics to identify and arrest the offender within 96 hours of the attack.
Unlike many cases that rely on fingerprints, this investigation hinged entirely on biological evidence. Forensics experts were able to harvest DNA samples from the victim’s clothing, which provided the crucial link needed to identify the suspect.
Detective Sergeant Nicky Simms, from the public protection unit, led the investigation and emphasized the importance of the forensic work.
DS Simms stated: "This case hinged not on fingerprints, but on DNA left behind by the perpetrator. The forensics, specifically the DNA forensics, were crucial in identifying the offender, and within four days of the offence he was arrested and he's not been out of custody since."
In addition to DNA, digital forensics played a vital role in securing the conviction. Data extracted from a mobile phone revealed that the perpetrator had performed online searches for attacks on sleeping victims and rape prior to the incident.
The offender was subsequently handed a 30-year extended sentence for the crimes.
Forensics: The Real CSI was filmed in direct co-operation with West Midlands Police. The series features five major cases investigated by officers across the region, providing an inside look at the technical processes behind modern policing.
The episode is currently available for viewing on BBC iPlayer.
