A 36-year-old man formerly of Kettering has been jailed for more than three years after breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and making indecent images of a child.

Mark Anthony Sinclair was sentenced to 44 months’ imprisonment at Northampton Crown Court last month, following an investigation by Northamptonshire Police. He has also been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for a period of 10 years.

Breach of Court Order

Sinclair had been issued a 10-year SHPO in January 2024 at Wood Green Crown Court following a previous conviction for a sexual offence involving a child under 16. The order prohibited him from deleting his internet history and from having unsupervised contact or communication with any child under the age of 18.

In May last year, Sinclair entered an online chat room and began communicating with a profile he believed belonged to a 12-year-old girl. He moved the conversation to a private messaging app and sent messages of a sexual nature.

The profile was, in fact, part of a covert police operation designed to safeguard children from online predators.

Arrest and Conviction

Sinclair was arrested on 21 May by the force's MOSOVO (Management of Sex Offenders and Violent Offenders) team. A subsequent forensic investigation of his seized mobile phone uncovered multiple indecent images of children.

On 24 July, Sinclair pleaded guilty to:

  • One count of breaching his SHPO.
  • One count of being an adult attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
  • Three counts of making indecent photographs/pseudo-photographs of a child.

Police Statement PC Holly Morgan-Humphrey, from the Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT), said: “Mark Sinclair thought he was sending private messages of a sexual nature to an unknown 12-year-old girl he befriended in an online chat room. Although thankfully there was not a real child in this case, it does not lessen the seriousness of it at all as the content of his messages were not only extremely concerning but also showed a total disregard for the court order put in place to protect children from him.”

PC Morgan-Humphrey added that the case serves as reassurance to the public that the force is working proactively to keep children in Northamptonshire safe from online threats.
