Young graduate finds dream data job leads to unexpected loneliness at home

March 4, 2026

A young graduate has revealed his first "proper job" has become a source of intense loneliness as he spends all day working from home with almost zero human interaction.

The bedroom boardroom

The anonymous data analyst explained that while he was initially grateful for the role, the reality of fully remote work has been a "crushing" blow to his social expectations. Instead of the networking and office socialising he imagined, his days are spent alone in a team of just three people.

The group meets for only 20 minutes a day via video call before everyone "disappears" back into their own tasks. For a single person still living with parents, the analyst claims the routine has become a repetitive cycle of sitting at home until the day simply ends.

"Remote work definitely has benefits like no commute and saving money," he admitted online. However, he argued that the setup primarily suits those who already have established families or active social lives outside of the workplace.

Is the job really the problem?

The confession has triggered a wave of responses, with many suggesting that the issue lies with the individual's lifestyle rather than the employment model. Critics pointed out that relying on an office for a social life can be a risky strategy for long-term happiness.

One respondent argued that the graduate's lack of hobbies was the "real problem" that needed addressing. They suggested that remote workers must be "diligent" about creating their own social opportunities through evening classes, meetups, or the gym.

The return to the office

However, others stood by the analyst, noting that Reddit often skews toward those who "don't find isolation a problem." Several people shared that they eventually switched to hybrid or office-based roles specifically to escape the mental toll of being fully remote.

Experts suggest that for those at the start of their careers, the lack of "incidental learning" and face-to-face mentorship can be a significant disadvantage. The young analyst now plans to use his current experience to eventually move to a company with a physical office and more people around.
