19-Year-Old's Study Abroad Dream Shattered After Father Steals Savings

February 17, 2026

A devastated 19-year-old has described the moment his vision "went blurry" after discovering his addict father had drained his life savings just 10 days before he was due to flee his toxic home for a study abroad program.

The £8.86 balance

The teenager, who spent two years working double shifts and skipping meals to fund his "exit," checked his banking app to find a balance of just twelve dollars—down from over £800 ($1,000) only three days prior.

Despite being 19, the victim discovered that because the account was opened when he was a minor, his father still retained full legal access to the funds.

"He knew if I didn't pay the deposit by Friday, I’d lose my spot," the student shared in a raw Reddit post, describing his father passed out on the sofa smelling like a "literal brewery" after a 48-hour bender.

The enabler in the kitchen

Adding to the trauma, the student’s mother reportedly defended the theft, dismissing her son’s despair as "dramatic" and claiming the father was simply "in a bad place."

The 19-year-old labelled his mother an "enabler" for making coffee for the thief while he faced the collapse of his future, including a pre-arranged job at a cafe overseas.

Under UK law, money in a joint account—or an account where a "responsible adult" remains a co-signatory—is often legally considered to belong to both parties, making criminal prosecution for theft notoriously difficult.

A path forward

Financial experts and community members have urged the student not to give up, advising him to contact his university's hardship fund immediately.

"Honesty goes a long way," one supporter noted, suggesting that study abroad programs often have emergency grants for students facing "unforeseen circumstances" outside their control.

Others have advised the student to open a fresh account at an entirely different bank—ensuring no family members are listed—and to look into interest-free emergency loans specifically designed for students in crisis.

For now, the student remains in his room with his bags packed, struggling with a level of "hate" he never knew possible as he tries to find a way to save his one chance at a new life.
