City leaders have united to launch a proactive new phase of work to reduce drug-related harm and crime. The Liverpool Combating Drugs Partnership met on 6 February to strengthen its "whole-system approach" to saving lives. This collaboration brings together the council, Merseyside Police, and health services to provide better support for all residents.
A major focus of the latest meeting was a new anti-stigma research pilot. Professor Harry Sumnall from Liverpool John Moores University presented progress on how fear of judgment discourages people from seeking help. The partnership aims to build "safer and more respectful environments" where individuals feel comfortable accessing vital treatment.
The LGBT Foundation also showcased how they are bridging the gap between tailored and mainstream services. They highlighted that for many, "choice and integration is what’s important" when accessing support. By addressing specific barriers for LGBTQ+ communities, the city ensures that no resident is left behind due to their identity.
The partnership reports directly into the Council's CitySafe Board to coordinate safety across all wards. This ensures that police and criminal justice partners work alongside voluntary organisations like the YMCA and Whitechapel. Such joined-up working helps to identify local needs more accurately and strengthens the city's response to substance misuse.
If you or someone you know is affected by drug or alcohol use, free and confidential help is available. Support services like River and The Forward Trust are working alongside the council to offer immediate assistance. The next meeting of the Liverpool Combating Drugs Partnership is scheduled for 29 June 2026 to track further progress.
